Every quarter I choose a dementia-related charity, to which I give a donation from sales of my book The Forgetful Elephant. This quarter I am delighted to be donating £156.00 to the Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC)) in Northern Ireland as a Thank You for the support they have given me over the past months. They made my trip to Northern Ireland last November possible, and they have totally embraced my book as a teaching tool to educate young children about dementia.

Amanda Leitch spent a huge amount of time working with DEED (Derry Engaging and Empowering Dementia), St Cecilia’s College and the Ulster Girl Guides, all of whom I visited on my trip. I was made so welcome by each and every one of them and overwhelmed by the passion that they all showed for raising awareness about dementia, especially to children. I only wish that others shared the same passion and enthusiasm as those who I had the good fortune to meet and talk to about my campaign.

This year, I hope to make another trip to Northern Ireland and continue to work with the girls from DEED when I introduce my new booklet Getting To Know You. For me, it is so important for children to interact with grandparents, especially if their grandparents have dementia. Together we can work to make every community a dementia friendly one, young and old.
